This is one of the best workouts I’ve ever done. Great cardio, full body, and you never ‘master’ it because you can always punch/kick harder, faster, better, so you can keep challenging yourself. With the first 15 minute cardio blast, then all the kicking punching rounds, it is truly full body. You do everything. The music is great and the instructors are really energetic.
It’s important to note that this is cardio kickboxing, not combat kickboxing. While they do go over form, in any class a majority of people are not going to be using correct form. They will occasionally walk around and give pointers, but since perfect form isn’t really the point, most of it they seem to let slide. If you are looking for a class to teach “fighting” or martial arts skills, this is not it.
The people at ILKB are incredibly nice. But, it is a gym, and they often fall into those gym phrases that rely on body shaming – things like ‘getting your summer body’ or encouraging people by saying it’s ‘shorts and tank top season’. It’s certainly not the worst, but they either don’t realize the implications of what they’re saying or don’t care. I don’t particularly want to be motivated to exercise in order to “be thin” and therefore “look better” in revealing clothes – I am doing this to get strong and be fit, and while they do talk about that, I’d rather they just leave all of the appearance stuff out of it. They are also very active on social media, so if you find that kind of community motivating, then they’ve definitely got you covered.
Despite these few issues, it’s a great workout and a ton of fun. I’d definitely recommend it for someone looking to try something new and up their fitness level.
