A San Francisco institution for hot slices and delivery in the Haight! Paul Geffner and Joe Goldmark opened the original Escape From New York Pizza on Haight Street in 1986. Back then, the music venue Full Moon Saloon was next door and had a window into Escape so patrons could order pizza without leaving the bar. When the Full Moon became the Red Vic Movie Theatre they covered up the window, so movie patrons had to sneak their hot slices into the theatre. Always a big supporter of live music, our Haight St location is known for its collection of original posters from the Fillmore, and Rock and Roll autographs. Other notable art includes a Matt Groening “Pizza is Hell” custom illustration.

In Short
The restaurant specializes in take-out and delivery, and has very little seating. Veering somewhat from its namesake genre, the take-out spot is best known for its "You Say Potato" pie, made with sauteed potatoes,… Read Full Editorial

Cheap, delicious, and open late by urbn via Citysearch on 5/1/2009

I'm sure I didn't eat enough pizza when I lived in New York. Now that I'm a block away from this joint, the mood arises for pizza ...way too often. It mostly has to do with the very not-New-York flavors in the pesto, potato, and garlic…

Love the pizza by hounder via Citysearch on 10/31/2008

Any place I can get broccoli on my pizza is going to have my attention!! But their stuff is always fresh and yummy. I use them mostly for delivery and they are pretty good about getting the pizza to me within an hour and it's still hot…

Great pizza by Kevin M via Insider Pages on 7/28/2008

This pizza might be the best around. So many different kinds of pizza to choose from and is also cheap. If you want New York style pizza but out of the hustle and bustle of new york come to this place.

Excellent Pizza by aguib d via Insider Pages on 5/24/2008

If you want good pizza you should come here. The pizza is great and there is such a big selection. It's not that expensive either and you will always have left overs. I would recommend this place to others.

When you Escape From New York, go to Escape From New York Pizza by J P via Insider Pages on 2/22/2008

Yes, this is the closest to NY Pizza in San Francisco. Some of the varieties are a little more California than NY (Pesto?). The cheese and pepperoni pizza are as good as you get on the streets of Manhattan.

This is Pizza for Californians and Tourists by couldnt via Citysearch on 9/7/2007

If you are actually thinking this is going to be New York pizza you're wrong. This is Californians with no passion making thin crust pizza. It's alright I guess, I have had it before will have it again. Not out of wanting a legit slice.…

Type the title here for your review of Escape From New York Pizza by Barry F. via Judy's Book on 4/2/2007

This is an ordinary hack West coast pizzaria with high prices. The only thing they had going for it was very stringy cheese. As a NYC boy and pizza gourmet I way prefer Tomassos or Arinell's pizza or even Orgasmic pizza. This was just…

Good pizza, but not the best, and expensive. by znmci via Citysearch on 11/13/2006

They had interesting types of pizza that were good. I would recommend trying the pesto or pesto and potato pizza, it was pretty good. I was surprised at the prices though, I think a slice was almost $4. I don't know if it's worth that…

Pizza! by Mary Franco ( via Insider Pages on 9/29/2006

I started going to this place because they used to pass out flyers for a free soda with a slice of pizza on Haight Street. Good pizza, but very little sitting room. PROS: Good Pizza CONS: Not much seating

pretty good pizza by raytchul via Citysearch on 8/16/2006

this wasnt the best ive had in the city, but definately not the worst. i had a slice of pesto with potato on top, and a LOT of whole garlic cloves, most of which i took off. it was good, but didnt have that much flavor. the crust was good…

The perfect slice by Allison I. via Judy's Book on 6/15/2006

I really love pizza. And the creme de la creme of New York style, thin crust pizza is Escape from New York. Ever since high school, I've loved going to Haight Street and a slice from this place is quinessential to the trip. The place is…

Top Notch Pizza Restaurant by Leanne P via Insider Pages on 8/31/2005

Escape from New York Pizza has three locations, all in San Francisco. This location in San Francisco's famous Haight district is a favorite of locals and visitors alike, including celebrities like Jack Black of Tenacious D fame, Simpsons…

The best pie around by vaca via Citysearch on 10/25/2002

I could eat their pizza every day and still love it. Fresh ingredients, great texture, consistently tasty.

Pizza Heaven. by corbinwright via Citysearch on 9/6/2002

A trip to Haight Street isn't complete without a slice of Escape from New York Pizza. Their pie is second only to a certain Chicago style pizza joint, and that's on the other side of the bay. There isn't much seating, so just grab your…

Escape from this Pizza by firbulig via Citysearch on 7/11/2002

Its ok NY Pizza, not the actual stuff, but it USED to be much better. It has definitely gone down in quality over the years. Its real heyday was back in the 80's. The recipes are good (Pesto Pizza, mmmm) but it seems the food preparation…

Denverite flips for pizza!!! by jilly via Citysearch on 6/27/2002

"Escape From New York" has, undoubtedly some of the VERY BEST pizza I have ever had the pleasure of eating!! It also boasts an eclectic collection of autographed celeb photos, which just happens to include one of my fave group, the…

Are you kidding? by kathrynis27 via Citysearch on 5/25/2002

I don't know which NYC these people are from, but when comparing this pizza to the pizza from the NYC I'm from, it stinks. Bland; no taste. They wouldn't last 2 days on the east coast. However, it's not horrible for California.

Pizza to Go by peterbehle_citysearch via Citysearch on 5/13/2002

The pizza's good here - thin, NY-style and not over-loaded on cheese. It's always packed, though, and hard to find a place to sit. Get it to go and find somewhere to eat outside, if the weather's nice.
