Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush: Gregory Lopez, MD

Gregory Lopez, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, including treatment of complex degenerative disorders like spinal stenosis. Dr. Lopez treats pediatric and adult patients at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Winfield, Illinois. 
An accomplished athlete, Dr. Lopez is a former Toronto Blue Jays minor league baseball player. He also served as shortstop and team captain for the Fighting Irish baseball team at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in arts, anthropology, and pre-professional studies before going on to complete his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. 
Dr. Lopez continued on to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, Irvine, in Irvine, California, where he helped to pioneer low-cost surgical simulators for training purposes. Then, he finished a spine surgery fellowship at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. 
The combination of advanced training and personal experience gives Dr. Lopez a deep understanding of the rigorous regimen athletes must endure. He specializes in treating athletic spine injuries as well as a wide range of conditions that cause back pain and neck pain.
Dr. Lopez has received numerous honors and awards, including the Scientific Exhibit Award of Excellence from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His patients appreciate the time he spends working with them as well as his conservative, minimally invasive approach to treatment. 
Outside of work and research, Dr. Lopez enjoys spending time with his spouse and four children.
