In Short
One of Southie's most welcoming hangouts provides area residents with a handsome spot for grabbing a bite of watching the game (there are plenty of TVs in the bar area and the dining room). The sprawling, multi-ethnic… Read Full Editorial
Playwright is great for appetizers & drinks. by Amy W via Insider Pages on 8/8/2009
The Playwright is a more upscale bar for the Southie scene. A great place to watch the Bruins, Sox, or Patriots. They are able to open the front windows which is nice on those hot summer days. Great beer & apps!
Playwright is a good place for snacks and drinks by Jennifer N via Insider Pages on 7/18/2009
The playwright's food is good, especially the spinach dip with pita chips, but the atmosphere can sometimes be lacking. It is a great place to watch a game, but if there is nothing good on for sports, there is little else to entertain you.
Playwright is Wonderful by kylee D via Insider Pages on 6/16/2009
Great New Look, Great Atmosphere for after work drinks, or to watch a sports event! Not to mention the food is DELICIOUS! I would highly recommend trying the spinach and artichoke dip for an appetizer!

This place is great for food, people or sports watching. My wife and I moved from Beacon Hill where we went to the Hill Tavern all the time when we were looking for good food but weren't in the mood for something fancy and expensive. The…
Good Sportsbar plus underrated food.. by dougbodde via Citysearch on 11/9/2005
This place is a great place to catch a game and enjoy food. The pizzas are especially good, I think. Nice beer selection and friendly staff only add to the place.

I have been to this restaurant several times, but mostly because it is one of the only options for a sit-down meal in this neighborhood.
The menu is mostly pub-style food and sandwiches, but some entrees are available. I'd recommend…
Playwright Cafe by Lorna M. via Judy's Book on 6/16/2005
The Playwright is located on Broadway and has two distinct sections for the bar and the restaurant. They have a working fireplace that they use during the winter.I've never been dissatisfied by a meal here, but I've never been thrilled,…
A Southie Secret by Rio via Citysearch on 6/19/2003
"Best of Boston" bartender Brian is always good for a chuckle & if that don't make you laugh - Fitzy's 70's dance moves will! The food is as good as Tommy's Irish "crack" and Kendall & Sarah's good looks can be distracting when trying to…
