About this business

Established in June 2009, specialTEA Lounge & Café
was the first of it's kind in Miami-Dade County.
It is owned and operated by two tea lovers; Chris & Marilyn.

Serving over 60 premium fresh loose leaf teas and tisanes; black teas, oolong teas, green teas, white teas, rooibos, honeybush, mate, herbal and fruit tisanes. Miami-Dade's only café serving only certified Organic, Fair Trade™, shade grown, locally roasted coffee as well as rooibos redespresso®. Also serving frappés made with organic, fair-trade coffee, blended crèmes, fruit smoothies made with antioxidant-rich rooibos, dozens of bottled craft sodas including Cheerwine®, Bruce Cost® Ginger Ales, Bubble Up®, Eric's Famous® Colas, MacFuddy®, sugar-cane Coca-Cola®, Pepsi® and Sprite® and more, plus hand-crafted Italian & French sodas, homemade pastries (including vegan & gluten-free choices), desserts and an array of delicious made to order panini, salads and wraps.

At specialTEA Lounge & Café, we are extremely consicious of our impact on the environment. Since opening our doors, we have enjoyed teaching our customers about sustainability, organic products and being earth-friendly. We use local and organic ingredients and materials whenever possible. We shop for our groceries in our biodeisel-powdered vehicle, and are always seeking other environmentally responsible vendors.

We use only eco-friendly disposables including fully renewable and compostable corn cups, lids, salad containers and utensils, bagasse plates and take out boxes, recycled paper sandwich wrappers made with a soy-based wax as well as toilet tissue, napkins and paper made of elemental chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer-recycled content.

We use eco-friendly biodegradable soaps and cleaning products. We recycle absolutely everything that is recyclable! During construction and all subsequent renovations, we used low voc paints, reclaimed wood and screws to build our counters, reclaimed railroad ties for our barstool wall, bamboo fiber pillows for our couches, bamboo countertops and tabletops as well as bamboo and cork wall paneling. We carefully recycled any materials we could not salvage. We use only energy-saving CF and LED light bulbs, an energy-saving water-heater, a water-saving dual-flush toilet as well as an ExtremeAir® hand-dryer (eliminating paper waste and using a fraction of energy a typical hand-dryer would.)

We created specialTEA with the planet and you in mind. So come in and enjoy a pot of tea with friends over a game of chess, relax with a book on one of our comfy couches, or study for an exam using our free, fast wi-fi. Whatever you choose to do, make yourself at home. Want to take specialTEA home with you? Go ahead! All our loose leaf teas and whole beans coffees are available for purchase. We also offer all the teaware and tea making tools you'll need to steep the perfect cup at home!

Tea is the "special-tea" at this lounge, where nearly four dozen varieties of loose leaf teas are served in a premium coffeehouse setting. Sippers stretch out on mint-green sofas, before long tables that are ideal for cracking open one of… Read Full Editorial

I think this is my favorite place ever. Great food, great drinks, fantastic customer service. I try to have something new here every time I come and I have yet to have ANYTHING bad. Long story short, stop reading this review and go here…

My Review by Brenda Meza via Urbanspoon on 9/19/2012

This place is absolutely amazing. I discovered it a little over a year ago and I've been back every month since to try all their wonderful menu items. My personal favorites are the Coco Curry Panini and the Hunny Steak (with chicken…

My Review by liz via Urbanspoon on 3/21/2012

I almost hate reviewing this place because it is so good I don't want to give it away, or have it turn into something less than what it is. Typical "mom and pop" type of feel run entirely by two people. I've tried almost every panini, and…

Superb Hidden Jem! This place is really all its pumped up to be. Tour of italy panini is a must have. Tea is also yummy. Take a laptop or good book and unwind, away from the whirlwind thats Miami.

Awesome place! Wish they were open more often!

Order the mango fusion smoothie. It tastes amazing, really natural and refreshing

My Review by Mabel via Urbanspoon on 2/18/2011

Very cute place to study/hang out near FIU. The Coco Curry panini was really good and surprisingly filling. Passion fruit tea was ok if you're really into tea. But next time I will probably come back for a frappe.

I use to go to special tea all the time and actually liked the place, but they completely lost my business due to the fact that if i go there 10 times at different times they will only be open once. They are going to go out of business and…

Super good. Don't let the plaza look detour you from going in. Inside it is awesome home feel cafe. Get the vanilla hazelnut oolong tea or Asian pear tea

Drink your worries away! by Lourdes Soto via Citysearch on 8/28/2010

This is the cutest Tea House in town! It's run by a great!!! young couple, trying to make their dreams come true. We should have more people like them !!! They are trying to make a name for themselves while making the day for strangers a…

My go to spot by garr7847 via Citysearch on 8/26/2010

By the name you automatically think it is only a tea lounge but in fact they have some of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever eaten. The prices are extremely reasonable with a very relaxed atmosphere. Bottom line- you will love…

Forget Starbucks by ValerieV via Citysearch on 8/26/2010

After meaning to stop by for months, I recently found my way to SpecialTEA and was totally hooked. I've tried every sandwich option, usually as a wrap but also as a panini, and they are all absolutely delicious. On top of their huge tea…

Best Tea I Ever Had! by erick1312 via Citysearch on 8/13/2010

This is definitely a place to come together with friends to share a large pot of tea. They have an amazing selection of teas, and are extremely helpful in creating new and exciting flavors. Their sandwiches are amazing as well. My favorite…

Can you make my tea Special for me please? by brittflor via Citysearch on 8/12/2010

I have been dubbed the pickiest and most demanding person anyone has ever met, with a passion for tea and light desserts in a relaxing setting. But I never knew where I could get such things in an environment that would catter to me and…

My Review by Kenpachi via Urbanspoon on 6/10/2010

This is the best sandwich shop in town. Don't let the name fool you. Yeah they got like 60 different teas and like 40 other drinks. But the panini's are the real attraction. Each one is lovingly hand crafted by a bearded man in a funny…

Went there on a Friday at 12 and it was completely closed... No one would answer the phone or anything. Giving it another try on Monday.

My Review by rufius via Urbanspoon on 12/8/2009

I've gone here a couple times in the last week. Its always pretty quiet and not blisteringly cold like some of the Starbucks I've been to.\r \r As for the tea, coffee and food, its fantastic. I generally drink Oolong which is hard to find…

My Review by abysm via Urbanspoon on 10/27/2009

Special Tea Lounge is a comfortable, attractive, inexpensive place to eat delicious paninis and desserts. They have a really good selection of tea, which is also available by the gram, and are open late. They also use eco-friendly…

My Review by Jeanette Nugent via Urbanspoon on 8/24/2009

I love going to SpecialTEA even though I am no longer an FIU student. It's a great place to hang out with friends, with comfortable couches and great board games (Scrabble, Taboo, etc.) Also, I love how they have over 20 varieties of teas…
