Tampa is located in the western part of Florida's peninsula, situated on the Gulf Coast. Boasting a population of 340,882 (as of 2008), Tampa is Florida's third most populous city and the 53rd-largest city in the United States. The city is frequently referred to as Tampa Bay because many sports franchises use this terminology in their names (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Rays). However, Tampa Bay is not the name of any municipality within the state of Florida. Tampa sits in Hillsborough County and serves as county seat.
