Dallas is located in northwest Texas, anchoring the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area, which is the largest metropolitan area in the United States that lacks any navigable link to sea. Boasting a population of 1,279,910 (as of 2008), Dallas is Texas' third most populous city and the 8th-largest city in the United States. Only New York City and Houston are home to more Fortune 500 headquarters in the city limits than Dallas. Dallas resides primarily in Dallas County, where it serves as county seat. However, parts of Dallas also extend into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.
