A mainstay of Saint Paul and the Lowertown neighborhood, the Black Dog Cafe is an unpretentious, all-day gathering spot. Since opening its doors in 1998 as a little coffee bar, the Black Dog has continued to stretch, push, and evolve to serve the growing needs of the ever changing Lowertown community. The café serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, beer, wine, cocktails, as well as espresso and non-alcoholic drinks. With an amazing happy hour from 3-6 PM, Black Dog Cafe has beverages for all occasions!

Good Coffee; Rude Staff and Management by MaggieShriver via Citysearch on 9/4/2011

The customer service is poor. They do demand a minimum purchase with VISA/Mastercard purchases, which is probably a violation of their merchant agreement. Like Katy0345, I did have an unsatisfactory experience there recently. …

Terrible Customer Service by Katy0345 via Citysearch on 6/5/2011

We went to the Black Dog for the first time during a Sunday Farmer's Market. I ordered the "Black Dog Chai" as the menu said it was "delicious" and I love Chai! However, the Chai was horribly spicy! I couldn't even drink it because it…

Boring food, good atmosphere... by eccentricafterglow via Citysearch on 9/18/2010

I went here on a quiet Saturday night and ordered a turkey sandwich - it wasn't anything to write home about or maybe I just chose a boring sandwich. Maybe this place is more for coffee and other things. The ambiance was great though. I…

Because we need black dogs by CelineA via Citysearch on 1/30/2008

The food is nice, the people are nice, the music is often great and the feel of friendship and freedom are pretty smashing in times dominated by super controled factory type food places. It doesn't try to be what it isn't, no false…

It is what it is, and it is great. by nathan3e via Citysearch on 11/27/2007

The one star review below is hilarious although it clearly is not meant to be. Apparently, the freelance writer went to the Black Dog ?at least 2 times a week? despite the rude staff, bad artwork, flies, dirty tables, and sub-par coffee…

"it certainly appeals to our children..."\r \r Compelling. \r \r Also, relax a bit. Your review of a restaurant was strangely focused on the review of another reviewer. You seem really angry and unfocused. Kids will do that to you. Try to…

I love this spot! Its got great ambience, art pieces, photography and other wall art. The pizza's are fantastic. Stop by after a visit to The Zeitgist Theater or The Farmers Market. Sara Remke is a great owner and she is the person behind…

You can learn tango! by donnay via Citysearch on 3/14/2006

Every third Saturday the Black Dog hosts local tango dancers. There's a half hour lesson, then a dance until 11:00. Friendly, fun, relaxed! The cover charge is only $3

there is life in lowertown by sarabanfil via Citysearch on 3/14/2006

Hey Black Dog good job on the new portabella sandwich and the salads. The eclectic wine list is quite refreshing. I was there a few nights ago and the place was swinging. It is so good to see people out and about in lowertown. Keep up…

Great taste by Pravin P. via Judy's Book on 8/7/2005

The staff and service are terrific, and the coffee....well, let's just say, it's a great way to start the day.works by local artists hang on multicolored walls, with a new display each month. The menu has soups, focaccia sandwiches and…

Not just coffee at Black Dog! by Bevin H. via Judy's Book on 7/21/2005

The Black Dog is primarily a coffee shop and wine bar, but they also have some tasty items on their food menu. Although the menu is not extensive, what they do make is quality. The northern salad is a treat with walnuts and gorgonzola…
