White Horse Tavern is the second oldest bar in NYC, opening our doors in 1880. We have served a diverse set of clientele over the years ranging from early 20th century longshoremen and famous writers and artists like Dylan Thomas, James Baldwin, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan & Jim Morrison to residents and visitors looking for a quality American restaurant & pub inside a historic time capsule of Old New York. We are one of the best West Village bars, offering a popular happy hour, a late night food menu and much more.

This vintage bar has quenched the thirsts of such luminaries as Dylan Thomas---by far its most notorious regular---Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan. In the afternoon, you still can find yourself in the company of writers, actors and musicians… Read Full Editorial

I'd rather spend an evening douching by mikey2324 via Citysearch on 9/14/2011

I went for a company outing the other night for some simple drinks and food. We were coming from The Upholstery Store which is a beautiful bar, so I originally thought I was being a bit unfair to White Horse Tavern as it didn't quite hold…

Bad experience by Avery34 via Citysearch on 7/11/2009

The White Horse came recommended as a famous pub. However, the experience is poor. We went there last night. It's packed in the main bar, everyone barging into you. You get told (rudely) you cannot stand in the side room because you can…

The Last Greenwich Village Writer's Bar by drink_club1 via Citysearch on 6/5/2009

This the only remaining Greenwich Village writer's bar. Chumley's (where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, womanized and got his picture on the wall) closed "for renovations" a few years back. It's still closed. The Lion's Head, Edgar Allen Poe's…

Where Thomas Dylan drank himself to death by Diana Q via Insider Pages on 4/4/2009

The White Horse tavern is most famous as the bar where Welsh writer Dylan Thomas drank himself to death (at least that's what legend says). One room is like a shrine to him, with portraits, pictures of his home, etc.\r The menu is fairly…

Great bar with a lot of history by Andrea B via Insider Pages on 1/4/2009

This bar is one of the best places to go on a hot, summer night! They have a great set of tables outside and a good menu, I especially enjoyed their grilled cheese sandwiches while tossing back a few pints of cider! Enjoy!

They ran out of the bar to return my wallet to me! by tequilasue1 via Citysearch on 11/25/2008

Besides being a great bar with great staff and patrons, upon leaving the gentleman that seated us came after me to return my wallet which had a lot of cash, ATM card, credit card, corporate card, license...saved my hide! Still floored by…

Great History by claire124 via Citysearch on 11/24/2008

I think this place has a great historical feature to it.. and its just a chill bar you can hang out at and not be bothered

extremely rude employees by cy63 via Citysearch on 11/16/2008

if I could give ZERO stars, I would. lame has-been dive bar with an extremely RUDE bouncer wannabe (i.e. his job is to check IDs but he thinks he works the door at 1Oak) who gives attitude to and yells at women half his size. the only…

Watch your change! by punter99 via Citysearch on 9/7/2008

Count the change that the bartender gives you back. He tried to pass off a 1 for a 10 last night. Wtf! The economy must be really bad. They'll take it whichever way it comes.

Worst bar experience I've ever had in New York by drew_chapin via Citysearch on 6/13/2008

I've never posted a revew on this site, however, I feel compelled to write something about my experience last night at the White Horse Tavern. I was joining some colleagues for drinks after work. The staff corralled our group into the…

AVOID: discrimination at this establishment by kimberfo via Citysearch on 1/5/2008

On 12/20/07, I entered the White Horse for much needed food with my service animal. I was refused service because of my "dog." They would not believe she was a service dog because she was "not a German Shepherd." I handed them a copy of…

Avoid by damejudie via Citysearch on 11/4/2007

A few things about this wretched cave of hell.\r \r 1) It smells like an explosion of flatulence mingled with a dirty keg tap and several decomposing animals. At every turn I was punched in the face with a flatulence-bomb so potent I…

Don't Go Unless There's No Other Option by bdbez via Citysearch on 10/19/2007

There are very few places to have drinks after work in the Financial District so we end up coming here a reasonable amount. Unfortunately, so does everybody else, so on weekday evenings this place is unreasonably crowded. It's really…

Worst Bar Experience by thekevin80 via Citysearch on 9/28/2007

I had a couple of friends visiting the states and made the mistake of bringing them here. I am no stranger to bars or even rude service - I work in the beer business and have lived in NYC all my life. I have to say this was the worst…

Table for two? Not this time. by goldenmann via Citysearch on 9/9/2007

My friend and I tried to go here tonight. The surly waitress said to sit anywhere we wanted, but as we tried to take an outside bench that was being vacated, a man who appeared to be in charge told us that those tables were only for four…

Lacking by funninnyc via Citysearch on 9/4/2007

They serve typical bar food; nachos, french fries, burgers, etc. Have typical beers on tap and bottled, not a huge variety. The service is lacking, our waitress didn't smile once. I wasn't impressed. Plenty of other spots in the West…

Best Happy Hour in town! by strawberry08 via Citysearch on 8/2/2007

Love this place. After a long day of working there is nothing more that I like than to go to this place and sit back with my girlfriends sippin a cosmo. The Outdoor seating makes the wait time less and the food is quite good while easy on…

Great by johnpreis via Citysearch on 3/22/2007

Can't ask for more. Great burgers and a Guiness. A perfect place to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

Best Kevin and Mr Brennan in the whole world, White Horse Rock's Kaisa Tissari, Finland!!!! by kievari via Citysearch on 12/21/2006

I have to say White Horse management has been the best in Manhattan and they have super staff . Food is exellent and service super, Kaisa Tissari

Horrible and rude service; insecure bouncer on a power trip and looking for a fight by ebs208 via Citysearch on 9/22/2006

I never post reviews, but the treament I received here on my b-day was so bad I was moved to warn others away from this place. I invited about 20 people (30-something professionals, not at all rowdy people) to this bar for a party,…
