Most of us know that Social Security provides income for people who reach retirement age, but it also functions as an insurance policy for those of us who are disabled and cannot work (SSDI). The premiums are paid with the FICA withholdings from your paycheck or, if you are like me, from your self-employment tax contributions.

There is also a supplemental program for children or people with a limited work history (SSI).
