This unassuming spot in quaint downtown San Mateo is a favorite with such revered chefs as Thomas Keller and Ron Seigel. Named for owner Osamu (Sam) Sugiyama, the casual ambience and reasonable prices are polar opposites from the dining… Read Full Editorial
lots of rice, bad menu and over priced by Esfandiar B via Insider Pages on 11/22/2010
I am not sure what all the hype is about this place. We got there, and they served me first and my date 10 minutes later... thankfully we had ordered appetizers for her to munch on. \r

Sushi Sam's Edomata is great! by ELAINE B via Insider Pages on 8/10/2009
They serve fresh and yummy sushi here. It's always busy here but it's so worth the wait. They have the BEST spider roll. Their lunch beno box is very good too.
Not for single diners, this restaurant discriminates by taija t via Insider Pages on 10/19/2008
On travel by myself, I went to Sushi Sam's Edomata in San Mateo for dinner on Friday, Oct. 17th, 2008. The restaurant was busy, and I could see there were no tables available. When I requested seating for 1 person, the host asked me 4…
Sushi Sam's by Marshall D via Insider Pages on 7/6/2008
I am amazed at all the reviews that give this just 4 stars. Are you kidding?! The daily fresh fish selection is second to none. If you want fat, rice filled rolls this is not the place. If you want top shelf quality fish go to Sam's.

Come here for the omakase or order sushi from the "daily specials" white board. They serve fish that you...
This is the WORST Sushi place I have ever been. by Phillip H. via Judy's Book on 7/8/2007
A long wait for bad service and sushi is not fun. I read many posts about how great this place was, so we had to go. First off, how does a sushi place not have the traditional ginger salad on the menu? Then their rolls that have more rice…
Fresh and fast for lunch by Anne R via Insider Pages on 1/18/2007
I just went with a friend to Sushi Sam's for lunch and it was a great place for lunch. Service was fast and friendly, and the sushi was very fresh and tasty. Prices seemed comparable to other local places and it was overall a very nice…

So popular, and I'm not sure why! by Shannon R. via Judy's Book on 8/8/2006
This place was SO hard to get into! We went with another couple, who just wouldn't eat anywhere else. "This is THE best!" we kept hearing. Our meal was rushed by the staff (they needed those tables) and the sushi itself was pretty darn…
Good stuff by Gavin W via Insider Pages on 8/3/2006
This place was packed on a Wednesday night -- signs that it must have something going for it. The sushi was good! They had some unusual names for some of them, like the "hot dog" (a roll with fried yellowtail mix) and the "chili dog"…
funky sushi by Sarah G via Insider Pages on 7/27/2006
Fabulous, fresh sushi in a busy, unpretentious (close to cafeteria-style) restaurant, where waiting in line in the street is part of the atmosphere. Only disappointment was the sake--if you like unfiltered sake, you'll get it in a…
Over-hyped, but can be great by Tom H via Insider Pages on 7/6/2006
San Mateon residents rave about Sushi Sam's, but I've always found it to be relatively average sushi fare with an above average price tag. Generally speaking, I'd rather eat elswhere but there is one exception: if you sit at the bar and…
Sushi Sam's Edomata by Jennifer M. via Judy's Book on 8/11/2005
Sushi Sam’s is definitely one of my favorite sushi restaurants. The sushi is extremely fresh, and despite the long lines during busy hours, the wait is quite worthwhile. Service is extremely fast. Once seated, tea is served and within a…

AWFUL!!!
nearly perfect by Tom P. via Judy's Book on 6/7/2005
Only the crowds and wait to get in makes it less than perfect....Sam's has been around for many years (at least 10) in San Mateo. A couple of years ago, he expanded to next door, unfortunately, his popularity grew as well, resulting in…
My Review by Alana F via Insider Pages on 1/6/2005
Sushi Sam's is an experience in itself. Sam has been creating exquisit sushi dishes for over 20 years in the Bay Area. His fish is always fresh and thickly cut. Sam's ability to present and offer unique sushi items and dishes sets him…
The Best Spider Rolls by Emily S. via Judy's Book on 12/19/2004
Sushi Sams, in downtown San Mateo, is incredibly popular - and with good reason. There is always a line out the door, and even with their expanded seating, the place manages to be packed on weekend evenings. I'm a big fan of their Spider…
