UCB-Do better by Jen on 4/30/2025 United Community Bank promotes itself as “The Bank that Service Built” and claims on its website:?“We’re proud to be United behind our communities.”Unfortunately, those values didn’t apply when it came to one of their own employees.A 21-year veteran of the bank, who was undergoing chemotherapy, was terminated over a mistake that occurred during a period of critical understaffing. Out of five employees:* One was on leave* One was on vacation* The only staff present were the Branch Manager, a Customer Service Rep, and a Teller with just 31 days at the bank. The incident was a two-person error, yet only the long-term employee was let go. The bank clearly couldn’t afford to fire both without disrupting operations, and instead chose to let go of someone who had dedicated over two decades of service. There were other options available—retraining, support, or a formal warning. Firing an experienced employee during a health crisis was not only unnecessary, it was unfair. It’s hard to reconcile this decision with the bank’s stated values around service and community.
