I had different motivations for becoming a doctor. My parents and many other relatives are doctors, so I was exposed to it as a child. It always seemed interesting. I was drawn to science, and I'm a social person, and combining those appealed to me. In primary care, you sit down with patients, shoot the breeze, ask how everything's going and get their life updates. As I got older, the idea of helping people became my main motivation. Primary care attracted me because of the variety of patients--no day is like another. I care for all ages. I love the variety in the patient population and in the issues. I advise patients to have an open mind concerning treatment options. Hear out the pros and cons of any given recommendation and really think it through. Also, have a list of problems to discuss. A lot of times, you know what you want to talk about and then you get in that room and you're like, man, I don't remember. Having that list can help streamline the visit too.
