Shortly after its formation Jeff Howard joined the company. John Runkel and Jeff Howard were active managers of the company and in 1989 purchased stock owned by Mike Fritchie and Denny Gallagher. In 1990, the name was changed to Howard/Runkel Landscape Associates Inc.
