The Scene
The White Horse has been feeding people since 1673, and the experience shows. This place is quintessential colonial Newport, with its creaky wide-board floors, low wood-beamed ceilings and big stone fireplaces. … Read Full Editorial
Just average by Guest G. via Judy's Book on 9/18/2011
Don't be seduced by the history of the tavern. There are many all over New England. The important thing is the food....the White Horse is a restaurant and the food and service are mediocre at best
White Horse Tavern by Jennifer C via Insider Pages on 11/13/2008
Is a treat, but not if you are on a budget, dessert alone will cost $9, drinks at the bar aren't cheap either. The ambiance though is what makes it worth it! It is a colonial historic building, lit by candles and a fireplace in the cooler…
Historic building by virginia K via Insider Pages on 3/24/2008
Fine dining in a truly historic building. The ambiance is extraordinary especially in cooler weather when the fireplace is blazing. The food and service is outstanding, but don't go here if you are on a tight budget.
Superb by Kelly S via Insider Pages on 3/19/2008
Perhaps one of the best restaurants I've been to. Cozy atmosphere in an historic and drafty building (bring a sweater in winter). Fireplaces help heat and add to the ambience. Expensive. VERY. We had a gift certificate and still ended…

A historical restaurant. Lighting with candle throughout the restaurant. Very romantic and excellent service.
Fantastic food by crimsin23 via Citysearch on 12/8/2006
This place has some of the best food in New England. The service is great, it can get busy but the wait time is well worth the great food.
Historic venture & great dining experience by petrovna1 via Citysearch on 4/11/2006
I have been to this restaurant many times and every experience was outstanding. The restaurant's building has been in use for over three hundred years and retains much of the original colonial charm. The food is wonderful and worth the…
So not worth the hype by redhand11 via Citysearch on 12/29/2005
We tried the tavern for lunch and were sorely disappointed in the service. Although the food was very good and if based on that alone place would be ranked as excellent, the unkempt, rude and totally incapable waiter we had means we will…
The worst service I've ever had! by katie125 via Citysearch on 11/27/2005
My inlaws drove up from new jersey and my apartment was not large enough for the ideal Thanksgiving meal so we decided to try the White Horse. Our experience was nightmarish. Our waiter was horrible with the personality of a doormat. It…

A friend and I went here for Sunday brunch. She has two small children, and although for dinner, the White Horse is probably not "kid friendly" it certainly is for a casual meal such as brunch. When we arrived we politely asked if it…
not a good value by ryuko via Citysearch on 6/21/2004
We wanted to have a special dinner in Newport, and this place was recommended. Other than the facts the floor was 1680's original and that t it is a romantic setting, food was very average, wine was below average, service was not…
unimpressed by ericmarmour via Citysearch on 11/21/2002
The waiter was like a rookie cab driver, I had
to send my meal back because it was under-
cooked and I easily spent twice as much as what
the "lack" of experience was worth. A highly
unfortuate meal and evening out.
