Open since 1934, this is the country's oldest drive-in and a national landmark. Nostalgia buffs will be drawn to the orange awning outside and orange vinyl stools and booths inside, not to mention the carhops, some of whom have been here… Read Full Editorial
Blah Food, Awesome Ice Cream Cone! by Kelly61 via Menuism on 3/5/2011
The joint was small, dirty, needed updating, slow, not-smiley server's, tiny food portions, 'BBQ' was messy...
Been coming all of my life, now taking my own child... by amvx2 via Citysearch on 1/8/2011
I absolutely love Doumar's for it's delicious food, but also for all of the memories that come flooding back each and every time we pull into the parking lot, turn on our headlights, and roll down the window. The food is SIMPLE. If you…
Crummy food, lousy service, dirty! by VBfrequentflyer via Citysearch on 12/30/2010
This place is a dump - the tables and floor are filthy. Food is not worth it. They slam everything into greasy wrappers and you have to beg the server to bring you a tiny paper napkin. And the attitude from the servers is another thing.…
Low prices. Slow service by CSMobileUser6 via Citysearch on 5/11/2010
The headline explains it all.
Don't believe the hype. by Another contributor via Citysearch on 9/23/2009
Finally, some people see beyond all the ranting and raving. I frankly don't see why Doumar's is as popular as it is. The barbecue is completely bland. There is absolutely NO way they smoke the meat on premises; there is no smoke flavor,…
they really know NOTHING about NC BBQ by maeunc via Citysearch on 8/17/2009
NEVER again. Really shoud be less than one star. Because of all the hype, my husband and I sought this place out this past Friday. It was packed but I have no idea why!!!!! Being from North Carolina, I should have know better than order…
a taste of the old times by Bunny B via Insider Pages on 4/27/2009
Doumar's is authentically vintage. I can't imagine Norfolk without it. The root beer floats and milkshakes are mouth watering. It's in a shady part of town, but oh well. It's still wonderful.

When we moved here all we heard was how great this place was. We went and we were disappointed, the second and third time- same thing. The food isn't bad, but it's not wonderful. It's reputation is great but the food isn't.
Best homemade ice cream! by amandalovesfood via Citysearch on 1/17/2009
My hubby stopped at this place due to a few of our friend's recommendations. We tried the pulled pork sandwhich, order of fries, and butter pecan ice cream cone. The sandwhich wasn't bad but we didnt get the extra condiments (bbq sauce, we…
Doumar's is a classic! by Cheryl F via Insider Pages on 1/6/2009
I can remember going there as a kid and eating, just as much as I go now. I don't know how long it has been around, but it is still just a good.\r
I recommend the "Vanilla Reggie" which is a thick Vanilla icecream with the cone ground…
The birthplace of the ice cream cone brings your meals on a tray while you sit in your car. by Contributor via Citysearch on 2/2/2004
The Scene
Rich in history and tradition, this national landmark has been making waffle cones since 1934. Owner Abe Doumar created the first waffle cone in 1904 for the St. Louis Exposition. Curbside service is reminiscent of…
Tradition by imgrrrreat77 via Citysearch on 7/10/2003
Doumar's has been a family tradition since the 70s. My mother went as a teenager when she was at Granby. In the 80s my mom and dad went there for dates. 90s and beyond were the child years for my sister and I. Now that I can drive and…
Alway Has Been, Always Will Be the VERYS by peggyannr via Citysearch on 1/3/2003
After growing up with Doumar's (couldn't wait until my parents would take me there as a child and later driving myself in High School), I returned everytime I came back to visit the Norfolk area! I have taken my husband and all of my…
Like My Mom Used To... by tiffr101 via Citysearch on 12/19/2002
The food is great, especially the limeaid, the bbq, and the ice cream they make there! It's fun to sit in the car, turn on the oldies, and have someone skate up to your car. It's just like my mom used to do about 25 years ago!!

Cool Local Hangout by robrueff via Citysearch on 7/23/2002
We LOVE Doumar's!!! I have been going there for BBQ and ice cream since I was a little kid. Now I take my 3 kids there for the same. They love it just as much as I do. The cones are made fresh every morning by the owner, who has to be…
