"Vincent DePhilippis Born in New York NY, raised in Naples Italy returned to New York City at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes France met in New York NY (Mamma and Papa) married in 1925, then settled in Westchester Pennsylvania. Then moved to San Diego in 1947 where they opened an Italian market named Cash & Carry Italian foods on India Street in San Diego. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are today know as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos that are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. The DePhilippis family would like to welcome you and your family to visit our restaurants to enjoy our traditional old Italian family recipes."

Jammed In by Tammy J via Insider Pages on 1/24/2009

Filippi's food is nothing spactacular, but works. I went with a group of people and it was busy. They jammed us into a corner and we were in the way of people walking by because they had to add extra chairs, so it was somewhat annoying. It…

Bland by Charlie G via Insider Pages on 1/22/2009

A San Diego Institution by Sara H via Insider Pages on 6/2/2005

Filippis is a San Diego favorite. They have a variety of pizzas and other Italian specialties. The anti pasta salad is really good and very filling. The portions are generous.
