Tom Ness' Oahe Kennels

Established in 1984, Oahe Kennels is located in Menoken, North Dakota and owned and operated by Tom Ness. In the mid seventies, Tom begin training hunting dogs after he purchased his first field bred English Springer Spaniel named Fanny. <br><br>Soon after, Tom graduated from the University of North Dakota and moved to Wyoming. Tom, having been bitten by the dog training bug, became involved in Spaniel Field Trials in Wyoming and Colorado. He started training professionally in the early 1980's while living in Colorado. <br><br>In 1984, Tom moved his family back to North Dakota and established Oahe Kennels. After recovering from a near fatal hunting accident, Tom bought a farm south of Menoken, North Dakota in 1994 and began training dogs and guiding fulltime. Oahe Kennels has trained hundreds of gundogs of all breeds, specializing in Spaniels and Retrievers. <br><br> Oahe Kennels has cocker, springer and lab puppies as well as started and trained dogs available. All the dogs in our breeding program are selected for temperment, soundness, natural retrieving ability and drive. In addition to being excellent hunting dogs, Oahe dogs are also great household pets.<br><br>Oahe Kennels offers beginning, intermediate and advanced field trial and gundog training. <br><br>Our philosophy is to thoroughly teach the dogs a few simple commands and then be insistent, never harsh or cruel. We usually like to begin with a ten to twelve month old dog and have it for three to five months. After the first few weeks the owners are encouraged to join Tom in training and learn to be good dog handlers. We train the beginning and intermediate dogs on pigeons and some wild game as well as liberated quail. Advanced dogs are trained using pigeons and pheasants, chuckars or ducks.
