Harold Ira Friedman, MD

Harold Friedman, MD, founded the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia in 1984 and has served as chief since. He has been a faculty member since 1984, becoming a professor of surgery in 1990.

A graduate of Hobart College in Geneva, New York, he earned a PhD in anatomy and his medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Friedman's special interests include aesthetic surgery, breast surgery and body contouring. He is involved in research on implantable materials and soft tissue interactions, and has published extensively in the plastic surgery literature. He has served as president of the South Carolina Plastic Surgery Society and is on the executive board of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Columbia Medical Society, and serves as an associate editor of the Annals of Plastic Surgery.
