Detroit is located in southeast Michigan. It is a major port on one of the busiest waterways in the world, the Detroit River, which connects Lake Michigan, Huron and Superior to the St. Lawrence Seaway and Erie Canal. Boasting a population of 912,062 (as of 2008), Detroit is Michigan's most populous city and the 11th-largest city in the United States. However, Detroit's population has been in steady decline since the 1950's, when it peaked at 1,849,568 (according to the 1950 census). Detroit sits in Wayne County and serves as the county seat.
