Furthest Point From McDonald's

I came across this map today.  It is a visualization by distance to the nearest McDonald's.  First and foremost, this is not my visualization.  I came across this on weathersealed.com on a post entitled Where The Buffalo Roam.

The map itself is both impressive and unsurprising. We’ve seen similar maps charting the spread of Wal-Mart, and the McDonald’s version reinforces a predictable truth: McDonald’s are located where people are. Still, the visual impact of seeing that coverage laid out across the U.S. is striking.

But here's where things get interesting. Thanks to data from the EZlocal business directory, we can pinpoint a key stat that stands out: the farthest point you can get from a McDonald’s in the lower 48. That lonely honor goes to a spot in South Dakota, where you can be a staggering 107 miles away from the nearest McDonald's location.

That’s 107 miles of peace, quiet, and zero chance of stumbling into a McGriddle. A true McDesert.

Digg has brought to my attention that I am stupid and it should read farthest, not furthest. I shall leave it unchanged so I can feel the full extent of the ridicule I have earned. :(

Whether you’re a data nerd, road trip junkie, or simply someone who enjoys obscure trivia, this map scratches a very specific itch. Who knew fast food geography could be so enlightening?
