Utah was home to Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI), often claimed as America's first department store, which was established on October 9, 1868, by Brigham Young to support local Mormon businesses and counteract price gouging. Although ZCMI operated for over a century and expanded into manufacturing its own products, it was sold in 1999 and ceased operations under its original name by 2007, with its iconic façade preserved at Salt Lake City's City Creek Center, now fronting a Macy's store. As of 2022, Utah boasts approximately 371,569 small businesses, including 76,760 small employer firms that account for 45.4% of the state's workforce and contributed to a net increase of 2,496 establishments between March 2023 and March 2024. The state was admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896, as the 45th state.
