Welcome to Illinois

Illinois, often called the Land of Lincoln or the Prairie State, became the 21st state admitted to the United States on December 3, 1818. Located in the Midwestern region of the country, specifically the Great Lakes area, it shares borders with Wisconsin to the north, Iowa and Missouri to the west (along the Mississippi River), Kentucky to the south (along the Ohio River), Indiana to the east, and Lake Michigan to the northeast, which also forms a water boundary with Michigan. Springfield serves as the state capital, while Chicago remains its most populous city, with an estimated population of 2,721,308 as of July 1, 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
